Public Health Nursing improves the quality of neighborhood life by working in partnership with community residents to create the conditions that ensure healthy lives.



Services & Activities

Public Health Nursing services and activities include, but are not limited to, the following:



Department of Public Health Nursing Administration

Nursing Administration is responsible for the professional practice of approximately 750 licensed nursing personnel throughout the Department of Public Health through a matrix management structure (refer to Nursing Administration organizational chart).

Nursing Administration's vision and mission align with the County's strategic goals of workforce excellence, service excellence, and organizational effectiveness.

The Nursing Director leads a core group of ten professional nursing staff and three administrative support staff in:

  • Nursing recruitment and retention activities

  • Nursing information systems development and support

  • Administration of a comprehensive student nurse training program for community health nursing with university affiliates

  • Nursing education and professional development programs

  • Development of nursing policies and procedures and standards of nursing practice

  • Review of relevant legislation and regulations pertinent to nursing practice

  • Representing management during collective bargaining

  • Providing nursing consultative services to programs within the department

  • Information dissemination through key nursing administrative personnel

  • Recognizing outstanding nurses and nursing practice at an annual nursing conference
