Mission
Public Health Nursing improves the well being of communities by
promoting health and preventing disease, disability and premature
death among all residents of Los Angeles County. Public
Health Nursing improves the quality of neighborhood life by working
in partnership with community residents to create the conditions
that ensure healthy lives.
Services & Activities
Public Health Nursing services and activities include, but are not
limited to, the following:
- Sharing the analysis of the practice data in an
transdisciplinary health team environment.
- Engaging in collaborative relationships with community based
agencies and/or specific populations to develop public policy and
target disease prevention activities.
- Analyzing data collected from practice and evaluating health
trends, services and risk factors to determine priorities for
planning outcomes and determining intervention or action.
- Serving as public health team leader in emergency preparedness
and response situations.
- Coordinating programs, services and other activities to achieve
established objectives.
- Providing consultation to community groups, health professionals
and agencies to facilitate the implementation of programs and
services.
Department of Public Health Nursing Administration
Nursing Administration is responsible for the professional practice of approximately 750 licensed nursing personnel throughout the Department of Public Health through a matrix management structure (refer to Nursing Administration organizational chart).
Nursing Administration's vision and mission align with the County's strategic goals of workforce excellence, service excellence, and organizational effectiveness.
The Nursing Director leads a core group of ten professional nursing staff and three administrative support staff in:
Nursing recruitment and retention activities
Nursing information systems development and support
Administration of a comprehensive student nurse
training program for community health nursing with university
affiliates
Nursing education and professional development programs
Development of nursing policies and procedures and standards of nursing practice
Review of relevant legislation and regulations pertinent to
nursing practice
Representing management during collective bargaining
Providing nursing consultative services to programs within the department
Information dissemination through key nursing administrative personnel
Recognizing outstanding nurses and nursing practice at an annual nursing conference
