Pets are part of our families! There are about 500 veterinary clinics in Los Angeles (LA) County. However, they may not be evenly distributed within the County and some communities may have limited access to a veterinarian.

The Veterinary Public Health Program (VPH) partners with many local organizations to bring pet health services to underserved areas of LA County. Pet owners can receive free or low-cost care for their pets and learn about improving health for the whole family.  Improving human and animal health in Los Angeles County is part of VPH's Healthy Pets Healthy Families Initiative.

The biggest pet health event is the Healthy Pet Expo which was started in 2015. VPH also participates in smaller-scale pet health fairs throughout the county.

VPH does not directly provide services to pets directly during Healthy Pet Expos. Much of the preventive care for animals is done through partnerships with local animal health organizations. Services may vary depending on the availability of our partners.

Services at Healthy Pet Expos may include

  • Free or low-cost vaccines for dogs and cats

  • Free or low-cost spaying and neutering

  • Nail trimming and grooming

  • Veterinary consultations ("Ask a vet" booth)

  • Educational booths about pet and human health

  • In addition, the Healthy Pet Expo has entertainment, contests and prizes

Disclaimers

  • Services provided at Healthy Pet Expos and their cost may change based on availability of local partners

  • Spay and neuter requires registration with the local organization BEFORE the event
