The mission of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LAC DPH) Continuing Medical Education (CME) Program is to promote high quality evidence-based health care for the residents of Los Angeles County.  We address issues that are important to both clinical and population health such as communicable and chronic diseases and public health practice.

We welcome suggestions for future content.

Clinical Recognition and Management of Hepatitis A: Mitigating Outbreaks Among At-Risk Populations in Los Angeles County

Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has been responding to an outbreak of hepatitis A among people experiencing homelessness (PEH) and people who use illicit drugs (PWUD) since April 2024. This outbreak has now surpassed the size of the local outbreak among PEH and PWUD that occurred in 2017-2018. This article summarizes the current outbreak and reviews actions clinicians can take to improve the recognition, reporting, management, and prevention of hepatitis A.

Penicillin Allergy Delabeling: An Antibiotic Stewardship Initiative

This activity is designed for healthcare providers including physicians and pharmacists. Topics included are an update on recent guidelines for addressing penicillin allergy; the benefits of penicillin allergy delabeling; and identifying appropriate candidates for oral amoxicillin challenge. Participants should become familiar with safe and effective ways to delabel patients identified as penicillin allergic who are admitted to the hospital.

Pain Management and the Management of Opioid and/or Other Substance Use Disorders

DPH has created a list of CME opportunities from other organizations to help physicians comply with the Medical Board of California’s CME pain management requirements and the new training requirements for DEA-registered practitioners.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is accredited by the California Medical Association (CMA) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health designates enduring activities with AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™.

Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Other learners may receive a Certificate of attendance. According to the California Board of Registered Nursing, Continuing Medical Education is acceptable for meeting RN continuing education requirements, as long as the course is Category 1, and has been taken within the appropriate time frames.
